Bob + Tom in my head

Bob: What would you say you do here?

Tom: Well look, I already told you, I deal with the customer so the engineers don’t have to!

Office Space 1999

This is a regular rerun in my head.

So. In-my-head-Bob: he’s a lot like my inner and terrified conscious — constantly looking at what I’m doing through the lens of “you’re a fraud”. Often, spoken critically, sprinkled with a dash of judgement.

And in-my-head-Tom, he’s hyperventilating into a bag because he’s about to be found out. Always looking to prove something. Never stopping to really answer the question.

The in-my-head-Tom wants to prove to the in-my-head-Bob that I (Scott) can actually be somebody.

Truth is, I‘m already a somebody — just trying to figure out how to be more of a good somebody.

3 Be Mores

  • be more present
  • be more literate
  • be more creative

I just kicked this off Memorial Day weekend with our first-ever family camping trip:

  • Deleted social apps (be more present).
  • Renewed our local library membership (be more literate).
  • And determined to write an article on design once a week (be more creative).

Isn’t it crazy that to be more … I might actually need less?

Look. When it comes to articles on UX and design, there are more than enough words on the subject. The good writers are crowded out by the also-ran writers.

What do I even have to offer the community? Shouldn’t there be less words on design? You have people skills?

Cue Bob again…

Truthfully, I’m not sure myself.

But, I’m willing to find out as I look to be more. I hope you’re as willing.

See you next week where I’ll be starting off with part one of “Dad + Design: How I’m Better at One Because of the Other”.

Got an idea for me to explore? Drop me a line. I’ll follow the pattern above (minus Bob + Tom).
